AVA – Wm. "Gilbert" Edgar, 78, of Ava passed away at 10:08 AM, Thursday, January 31, 2019, at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, surrounded by his loved ones.
Gilbert was born on March 11, 1940, in Ava, the son of John and Eleanor (LePere) Edgar. Gilbert married Vivian Ann Young on August 28, 1964, at the Drury Christian Church in Carbondale, and they celebrated 54 years of marriage.
Gilbert was employed at Meadowlark Farms, and Continental Baking Company as a Wonder Bread salesman where he retired after 36 years. He made a lot of friends over the years. Gilbert served in the National Guard and served from 1963 to 1969, where he was a cook, he really enjoyed feeding the men. Gilbert was a faithful servant to God and served as a Sunday school superintendent and youth sponsor in the past, and as a Deacon for over 45 years at Denmark Baptist Church. Gilbert enjoyed supporting the Trico Softball team and watching the girls play.
Gilbert is survived by his wife; Vivian Edgar, of Ava, children; Tim (Lorna) Edgar, of Ava, Audra (Steve) McBride, of Murphysboro, Connie Edgar, of Ava, grandchildren; Ashly (Michael) Tullis, Jeremy Edgar, Koral McBride, Connor McBride, and three great grandchildren; Phalin, Nevaeh, and Grayson. He is also survived by two brothers; John Cecil (Roberta) Edgar, of Ava, Randall (Margaret) Edgar, of Ava, many other nieces and nephews, and a special lifelong friend; Carl Runge.
Mr. Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, sister; Carolyn O'Dell.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Sunday, February 3, 2019 at the Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with Rev. Marty DeRoche officiating, burial will follow at the Ava Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday evening at the funeral home where friends may call from 5 to 8 PM, and then on Sunday from 7:30 AM until the hour of service. Memorials may be made to the Denmark Baptist Church Building Fund or to the American Cancer Society.
