Obituary


SPARTA – William E. "Bill" Hamilton, 85, of Sparta, passed away at 2:14 pm, Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at the Sparta Community Hospital, Sparta, Illinois.

Bill was born in Sparta, Illinois, on May 3, 1932, the son of William J. and Florence Reid Hamilton.  He married Janice M. Mathews on December 22, 1956 at St. John's Church, Evansville, IL by Rev. Carl Beck and Rev. Thomas H. Laufer.  He was retired from World Color Press, Sparta.  He was a member of Bethel Reformed Presbyterian Church, Sparta, where he was an Elder for over 30 years and made an Elder Emeritus.  Bill served on several Mission Trips to Belize, spent 12 different years in Fairmont, West Virginia, Biloxi, Mississippi after the hurricane and Joplin, MO after the tornado; he was a former member of Rotary; and a member of Habitat for Humanity.

Bill is survived by his wife, Janice M. Hamilton of Sparta; daughter, Jan (Pat) Day of DuQuoin, IL; son, John Mathews (Jennifer) Hamilton of Sparta; grandchildren, Zachary (Kalyn) Davis of Marion, Ronnie Gene (Amber) Davis of DuQuoin, Isabelle L. (Fiancee, Zach Hall) Hamilton of Sparta, Eli Mathews Hamilton of Sparta, Jack A. Hamilton of Sparta, Sophie A. Hamilton of Sparta; two great grandchildren, Asher Davis and Eloise Hester; brother, Roger R. (Marilyn) Hamilton of Sparta; brother-in-law, William E. (Judy) Mathews of Plano, TX; four nephews, Jim (Molly) Hamilton of Sparta, Jay (Kathy) Hamilton of Sparta, Dave Mathews of Seattle, WA; and Dan (Suzanne) Mathews of Flower Mound, TX; one niece, Jo Hamilton Harvey (Jeff) Megee of St. Louis, MO.

Bill was preceded in death by his Parents and Parents-in-law.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, August 28, 2017 at the Bethel Reformed Presbyterian Church in Sparta with Rev. Alex Eppstein officiating.  Burial will follow at Sauer Cemetery in Evansville.  Visitation will be at the church on Sunday from 5 pm until 8 pm and on Monday from 9 am until 11 am.  Memorials may be given to Bethel Reformed Presbyterian Church or Covenant Seminary, St. Louis.
