Obituary

WILLISVILLE - William Griffiths Sr., 88, better known as "Wild Bill," "Big Red," or "Honest Abe," passed away peacefully on January 29, 2022, in Granite City, Illinois.

"Big Red" was a combat veteran who volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a seasoned ironworker who mentored many.

In retirement, "Wild Bill" spent most of his time fishing, hunting, gardening, and cleaning. He had a knack for finding yard sales, flea markets, and auctions. He enjoyed giving people something to talk about, even if it was him. Some may describe him as ornery, and his family would agree with that description.

William had a sense of humor that either made people laugh uncontrollably, or it upset them enough to not speak to him. Either way, he was having the time of his life.

William was an avid sports lover. He followed every game played by our local Trico Pioneers and St. Louis Cardinals. His passion for both teams was well known due to his loud voice, red face, and constant presence. His TV has been verbally abused for years.

"Honest Abe" was a resourceful man who knew every secret local fishing hole and best hunting area. Most of his retirement was spent fishing to fill his freezer so he could host fish dinners for his family, church, and community.

There was nothing William loved more than a cherry red pick-up truck, perfectly polished, and not a speck of dirt on it. He was most proud of his garden and spoke highly of it often. He also enjoyed giving away most of its contents to neighbors and family.

He was loved by many.

William is survived by his children: Ashley Johnson of Florida, Tina Griffiths of Carterville, IL, Pamela Griffiths of Nevada, William Griffiths Jr. of Willisville, IL, Marsha Griffiths of Willisville, IL, Shelley Griffiths of Florida, and Terri Griffiths of Ava, IL; grandchildren Saylor, Peyton, Griffyn, Jesse, Cole, Tara, Dustin, Daniel, and Dylan; great-grandchildren Aiden, Ariel, and Jordan; his brother Danny Ray Griffiths and several nieces and nephews.

William is preceded in death by his parents, Edward E. and Lucille Myers Griffiths Sr., his sisters Gwendolyn "Jean" Bradley, Helen "Ruth" Jones, Azlee "Rusty" Mady, Nellie Zeiser, and his brothers James "Nelson" Griffiths, Edward "Bud" Griffiths, and one child, Crystal Griffiths.
