STEELEVILLE – William J. "Bill" McCarty, 72, of Steeleville, passed away Friday, August 16, 2019, at home.

William was born on June 6, 1947, in Murphysboro to J.D. and Juanita Flener McCarty.  Bill married Willene M. Duensing on August 5, 1993.  Bill was a member of Steeleville Baptist Church.  He served in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1972.  He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan for 2 ½ years.  Bill graduated from Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg and then from Radio Broadcasting School in Kansas City, Missouri.  Bill was a broadcaster and salesman at WXAN Southern Gospel Radio Station in Ava for over 25 years.  He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed attending St. Louis Cardinals games and interviewing players for his radio show.

Bill is survived by his wife, Willene McCarty of Steeleville; one daughter (with wife, Brenda Kay Childers of Chaffe), Laura (Leo) DuFrenne, and granddaughter, Maggie, all of Red Bud; one sister-in-law, Sharon Boren of Carmi and two nieces, Lisa (David B.) McCarty of Kingwood, TX and Lisa (David A.) Gwin of Carmel, IN, two brothers-in-law, Willard (Pat) Duensing of Danville, IL and Darrell (Tammy) Duensing of Prairie du Rocher, IL.

Bill was preceded in death by his Parents and half-brother, Dr. Phil Boren.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, on Monday, August 19, 2019 at Steeleville Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Scott Foshie officiating.  Burial will be at 3:00 pm, at Herrin City Cemetery.  Visitation will be at the church from 9 am until 11 am.  Memorials may be made to the Steeleville Baptist Church Building Fund and WXAN Radio.  Wilson's Funeral Home, Steeleville is in charge of arrangements.
