Obituary

STEELEVILLE – Violet Ebers, 94, of Steeleville, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2021, at Three Springs Lodge, Chester, IL.

Violet was born in Walsh, IL, on August 24, 1926, to Otto and Leona Lindwedel Eggemeyer.  She married Clarence N. Ebers on June 3, 1945, at Zion Lutheran Church, Walsh, IL.  He preceded her in death on February 4, 1989.

Violet was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Wine Hill.  She was a member of the Ladies Aid, the planning committee for a new Parish Hall that was built, the women's quilting group, and served on the Church Council.  She designed and constructed a quilt hanging commemorating the Church's 150 th anniversary.  Violet was a member of the WRENS, an organization who raised money for Christ Our Savior Lutheran High School.  She also was a member of the Southern Illinois Arts and Craft Guild and a member of the local Home Extension organization.

Violet was a housewife who had a quilt and craft business she operated out of her home as well as a quilt house she set up to showcase her many quilts, crafts, and antiques, and giving tours to the public of her quilt house.  Through the decades, she made hundreds of quilts.  She also displayed her work at craft fairs and quilt shows sponsored by the Arts and Crafts Guild.  Along with other artisans, her work was on display at the DuQuoin State Fair.  She sold one of her quilts to the celebrity Red Skelton who was performing in the grandstand at the fair one year.  Violet also donated quilts to Christ Our Savior Lutheran High School to be auctioned off at their annual fundraising event.  Giving demonstrations of making yoyos and quilt construction techniques at various local quilt shows and frequently took home ribbons for her quilts and wall hangings.  Each spring, Violet looked forward to the National Quilt Show held in Paducah, KY.  Several years she organized a group to go by motorcoach to Paducah to see quilts from around the country and foreign countries.

Violet was born and raised on a farm and later becoming a farmer's wife for 44 years and mother of four, Violet had an active life.  She planted a large vegetable garden every year from which she canned much of the produce.  Leading by example, she taught her children how to be a good Christian.  Looking for the good in other people was part of her personality.  For relaxation, she enjoyed the cane pole fishing and sitting out in the front yard on a hot evening.

Violet is survived by her children; Lonny (Judy) Ebers of Chester, IL, Larry Ebers of Steeleville, IL, and Joyce (Jerry) Ohlau of Percy, IL.  Six grandchildren; Andrew (Lacie) Ebers, Daniel (Melissa) Ebers, Jessica (John) Kranawetter, Jill (Jeff) Wilson, Jodie (Adam) Carey, Jeanna (Jason) Hammel.  Nine great grandchildren; Jade and Jackson Kranawetter, Jacey and Jacob Wilson, Jemma, Josslyn, and Jules Carey, Jayla, and Jase Hammel.  Violet referred to nine great grandkids as her "J-Birds".
