STEELEVILLE – Vernon R. Cane, 83, of Steeleville, passed away on Friday, May 7, 2021, at his home in Steeleville, Illinois.
Vernon was born in Chester, Illinois, on May 16, 1937, the son of Hugh F. and Gezell E. Wagner Cane. He was a former Coal Miner at Captain Mine in Percy and retired Custodian for the Steeleville High School. Vernon was a member of United Methodist Church, Steeleville. He was a strong supporter of the Steeleville Athletic Programs and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Vernon is survived by three daughters, Kim (Brad) Robinson of Loxley, AL, Tammy (Donnie) Gaetz of Steeleville and Stacey (Mark) Westermann of Campbell Hill; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and one sister, Lorraine Behnken of Pace, FL
Vernon was preceded in death by his Parents; four brothers, Russell Steele, Rex Cane, Frank Cane, and Ira Cane; and one sister, Icylemae Hille.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 am, Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at the United Methodist Church in Steeleville, with Rev. James Tinzmann officiating. Burial will follow at Paradise Cemetery, Steeleville. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 5 pm until 8 pm and on Wednesday from 8 am to 10:30 am. Memorials may be given to United Methodist Church, Steeleville or Steeleville Unit School Athletic Department. Due to executive order, face masks must be worn, and social guidelines must be followed.
