ROCKWOOD - Ruth Evelyn Brown, 87, of Rockwood, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at 10:46 a.m., while surrounded by her loving family. After suffering a stroke on Mother's day, she fought hard to regain her health, but eventually succumbed to complications of the stroke.
Ruth was born on December 24, 1928 in Cora, IL to John and Bertha Ray McLaughlin. She was married to the love of her life, Chester Lee Brown in Cora on September 16, 1950. Chester passed away on September 16, 2000, on the day of their 50th wedding anniversary.
A faithful servant of our Lord, she was a long-time worshipper at the First Presbyterian Church of Rockwood, and a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Chester, where she served many years on the Session. She also served on the Degognia Township Election Board. Ruth had a long career working at Egyptian Telephone Cooperative in Steeleville where she retired as the Billing Manager in 1997. Famous for her mile-high angel food cakes, she loved baking and cooking for others. She also loved playing games, her favorite, by far, being Pinochle.
Left to honor Ruth and remember her love are her sister Norma Suchman of Caseyville, brother Johnny (Margie) McLaughlin of Cahokia, two children, Rick (Debbie) Brown of Ellis Grove, and Renee (Neal) McCain of Saint Marys, GA, three grandchildren Amanda (Chris) James of Saint Marys, GA, Heather (Tim) Hooten of Perryville, MO, and Kristin (Jeff Beers) Brown of Carbondale, two step-grandchildren Matthew (Alyssa) McCain of Raleigh, NC and Michael McCain of Swanton, MD, four great-grandchildren Aaron and Miley Hooten and Ava and Abigail James, one step-great-grandchild Corinne McCain, one niece, five nephews, and many beloved great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Chester, and brother-in-law Bob Suchman.
Ruth will be remembered as a bright, shining light in the community and churches she served.
Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava with Rev. Cecil Dunning officiating. Visitation will be at Wilson's Funeral Home, Ava, from 11 am until 2 pm Saturday. The preferred form of remembrance are memorials made in Ruth's name to the First Presbyterian Church of Rockwood, the First Presbyterian Church of Chester, or her favorite charity, the Marion Medical Mission (www.mmmwater.org), whose mission is to "Share the love of Christ with the extreme poor in Africa by providing all in need with a sustainable source of clean, safe drinking water."
He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." (Psalm 46:10).
