AVA, Robert Lee Volkman, 72, of Ava, passed away at 8:28 A.M. Tuesday, April 05, 2011, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro, IL. Robert was born January 19, 1939 in Campbell Hill, Illinois the son of Arthur W. Volkman and Gertrude (Beckman) Volkman. Robert married Rosalind Sue Cheatham on June 29, 1963 in Campbell Hill, IL. He was a retired construction carpenter. Bob was a veteran of the US Army having served from 1958-1960 in the 101st Airborne, 506 Battle Group. He was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Campbell Hill, Carpenters Local #1361, Chester, IL and Sons of the American Legion, Murphysboro. Robert is survived by his wife, Sue Volkman of Ava; daughter, Kathy (Doug) Hammel of Ava; son, Curt (Julie) Volkman of Ava; grandchildren, Kyle & Kaitlyn Hammel and Caleb and Chandler Volkman; sister, Shirley (Tom) Nisbet of Ava; and brother-in-law, Ronald (Glenda) Cheatham of Ava. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and one infant son. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 8, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava with Rev. Alan Kornacki, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Ava Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Wilson's Funeral Home, Ava on Thursday from 5 to 8 pm and on Friday from 7:30 am until 11 am.
