CUTLER – Melvin Hardy Carrothers, 84, of Cutler, passed away Sunday, April 17, 2022, at Lavender Ridge Memory Care, Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
Melvin was born January 17, 1938, to Gilbert and Edith C. Carrothers (Hardy) in Cutler, IL. He married Jacqueline Bound on November 22, 1962, in Dupo, IL. She preceded him in death on April 3, 2022. Melvin leaves behind a legacy of service to his church, community, and country. He was a faithful member of Cutler First Baptist church. Melvin served as the Sunday School Director, Deacon, and Trustee throughout the years. For almost 50 years he served the Village of Cutler in various roles including Clerk, Board Member, and Water Superintendent. In recent years he founded and maintained the Cutler History Museum located in the town's Community Center. Melvin proudly served in the U.S. Army. Most importantly, he professed his faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and sought to serve Him faithfully with his life.
Melvin is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Jennifer Carrothers and grandchildren, Ian and Elena, all of Mt. Vernon, IL. Also surviving is one sister, Norma Lea Helvey of Cutler, IL, brother-in-law and wife, David and Doris Bound, Jr. of Conway, AR, and cousin, Ramona Bayer of Steeleville, IL, along with several nieces and nephews.
Melvin is also preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Donald Helvey.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, April 21, 2022, at First Baptist Church, Cutler, IL, with Rev. Zach Furlong and Rev. Wes Henson officiating. Burial to follow at Cutler Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5 – 8 pm, Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at Wilson's Funeral Home, Steeleville, then 7:30 – 9 am, Thursday and 10 – 11 am, at the church.
