PERCY – Matthew A. Henson, 39, of Percy, passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at St. Louis University Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri.
Matthew was born in Carbondale, Illinois, on March 23, 1984, the son of Richard and Peggy Miesner Henson. He was a veteran of the United States Marines, and retired after 21 years of service. Matthew was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church-Wine Hill, Steeleville.
Matthew is survived by his parents, Richard "Rick" and Peggy Henson of Percy; two sisters, Alicia (Scott) Pate of Spanish Fort, AL and Stephanie (Justin) Hecht of Steeleville; two brothers, Zachary (Caitlin) Henson of Percy and Adam (Jessie) Henson of Ava; nieces and nephews, Alexis and Laila Pate, Kaden and Adelyn Hecht, Haylie and Herold Henson, and Wyatt Henson; his Best Friend, Ace (Chesapeake Bay Retriever); and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
After 39 years of serving God and 21 years of serving his country as a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corp., Matthew Aaron Henson is on his way to be with family and our Savior, Jesus Christ. Being the selfless person that he has always been, he wishes for his final gift to be the gift of life for others. As a Marine, he has been blessed to see the world and have once in a lifetime opportunities. He loves family, hunting and fishing. Never having children of his own, he earned the title of "Funkle" meaning Fun Uncle. He is leaving behind his parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, and Ace, his dog and best friend forever. Matthew was preceded in death by his Maternal Grandparents and his Paternal Grandparents.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 31, 2023, at 11:00 am, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church-Wine Hill, with Rev. Mark Harriss and Rev. Mark Sedwick officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery-Wine Hill. Visitation will be at Wilson's Funeral Home, Steeleville, where friends may call from 5 pm until 8 pm Sunday, and on Monday from 7:30 am until 9 am then at the church from 10 am until 11 am. Memorials may be given to Tuition Fund at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
