Obituary

It is with human sadness but spiritual joy the family of Mary Thompson announce her transition, February 1, 2017, to join her creator and Savior, her loving husband of 29 years, many family members and a lifetime of friends.

She departed quietly from Randolph County Care Center with the prayers and farewells of her family.  She was 88 years old.

Mary Alice Elsey Hodge Thompson was born to Homer and Della Elsey, May 18, 1928 and was raised on the family farm near Steeleville, Illinois. She was baptized, confirmed and a lifetime member of Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville.  She was a member of Kaskaskia VFW Auxiliary #3553, Chester, IL and the B.B.K. American Legion Auxiliary #480 in Steeleville, IL.  She graduated from Sparta High School where she met her future husband, Lyle Hodge, and they married October 2, 1943 in Perryville, MO.  After his passing in 1973, Mary was married to Walter Ray Thompson in 1975 at Steeleville, IL and he preceded her in death in 1989.

In addition to being a loving mother and homemaker, Mary worked at Spartan Printing and operated a general grocery store in Plaindealing, LA and later worked at Wal-Mart.  She loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as cooking, gardening and dancing.  She also loved to crochet and handed out many afghans to both her family and friends and to anyone who needed one.

Mary fought a long and brave battle with Alzheimer's and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.  She will be eternally grateful to the many kind and caring people she met along her journey and especially during her stays at Manor at Mason Woods, St. Joseph of the Pines and Randolph County Care Center.  Many there assisted her in her times of need and brought smiles to her face and offered her encouragement and hope during her darkest hours.

Mary is succeeded in life by her daughter, Mary Klein (Bill Hood) and her son Loren (Vicki) Hodge; her grandchildren, Gina (Art) Ashbrook, Melanie (Kirk) Verner, Joshua (Katy) Hodge and Justin (Ellen) Hodge; her great grandchildren, Olivia and Sophia Ashbrook, Alex, Jadyn and Trey Verner, Finn, Fiona and Seamus Hodge and Mae, Betty Jane and Emmylou Hodge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Hodge, 2 sons, Allen and Brian Hodge, her parents, Home and Della Elsey, sisters, Elnora Olsen, Ada Ruth Miller and brothers, Walton Elsey and Calvin Elsey, a special nephew, Richard Dickey and a special friend, William Bill Dahlem.

Funeral Services will be held at 11AM on Saturday February 4, 2017 at Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville, Illinois with Rev. S. Blake Duncan officiating.  Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery, Steeleville, Illinois.  Visitation will be at Peace Lutheran Church on Friday where friends may call from 6 to 8PM and on Saturday from 8:30AM until hour of service.  Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Peace Lutheran Church, General Fund.
