SPARTA, Martha Jane "Janie" Svanda, 88, of Sparta, entered into rest, Friday June 19, 2015 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was born March 4, 1927 to Doris and Viola (Lipe) Smith. On September 13, 1947, she married Norman Svanda at Denmark Baptist Church in Denmark, Illinois. Martha was a homemaker. She also spent over 1,000's of hours as a volunteer worker at the Sparta Hospital. Martha is survived by her husband of Sparta; one daughter, Jacqueline (Michael) Miesner of Steeleville; one son-in-law, Dale Berry of Sparta, sisters-in-law, Augusta Smith of Illinois and Kathyrn Smith of Arizonia. She also leaves six grandchildren: Brent Bailey of Michigan, Matt (Amanda) Berry of South Dakota, Nicole (Anthony) Jonas of Wisconsin, Becky (Langston) Rose of Illinois, Kristen (Jim) Vizcarra of Missouri, and Betsy Berry of Missouri and 14 great grandchildren. Martha is preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Bernice Berry, one granddaughter, Angela Berry, one daughter-in-law, Barbara Berry, one sister, Geraldine Smith, three brothers, Benton, Nelson and Robert Smith and one sister-in-law, Helen Smith. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the United Methodist Church of Sparta, Illinois with Rev. Gary L. Feldman and Rev. Robert Souders officiating. Burial will follow at Caledonia Cemetery, Sparta, IL. Visitation will be at United Methodist Church on Friday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Memorials may be made to the Sparta United Methodist Church Building Fund or the American Heart Association.
