CAMPBELL HILL - Margaret M. Smith, 96, of Campbell Hill, passed away at 5:30 am, Friday, December 13, 2013 at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County. Margaret was born in Campbell Hill on December 21, 1916, the daughter of Rev. F.W. and Lena Buermeister Repke. She was born, baptized, confirmed and graduated all in Campbell Hill, where she also lived alone up to the last two weeks of her life. Margaret was a lifelong member of the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Campbell Hill. She stayed with her brother helping with his children after the death of his wife and later worked as a Nanny and Housekeeper and at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, MO. Margaret married Roscoe VanAusdoll on September 7, 1943. Her father, Rev. F.W. Repke married them in St. Ann, MO. Then full circle, they moved back to Campbell Hill in a small three room house, where many memories were made. He preceded her in death on January 1, 1957. Margaret later bought the Telephone Office House and made it home for she and her three children. She was a hairdresser in her home. Her children helped her learn to drive a car in the empty lot next to their house and on the rock road to Shiloh, IL. Raising three children alone was hard. She did not work outside of the home until her children were raised. She then married Arthur L. "Jr." Smith on July 12, 1967 in Campbell Hill. He preceded her in death on February 7, 1989. She later married William L. Smith on June 16, 1990 in Phoenix, AZ. He preceded her in death on November 27, 1997. Margaret went to work at The Farmers Store in Campbell Hill and then the Cake Mix Plant (later known as Gilster Mary-Lee) in Steeleville. During this time, she always provided Care Packages for her children and their families. Later she worked for Shawnee Alliance as a Care Giver for the elderly. She took much pleasure in caring for others. Margaret's best gifts were having family and friends stop and visit. She loved to spend time with them. She liked to embroidery and fed the birds and squirrels. At the age of 96, she had experienced many of lives ups and downs. One of her greatest joy was going to church even though she couldn't hear most of the service and of course going out to eat. Margaret is survived by her special friend, Merle Wente of Steeleville; her children, Angela Olinger of Campbell Hill and David R. (Alma) VanAusdoll of Marion, IL; 14 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Barbara (Nelson) Slusher. Margaret was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Michael D. VanAusdoll; one son-in-law, Fred L. Olinger, Jr.; two daughters-in-law, Marcia VanAusdoll and Victoria VanAusdoll; three brothers, Wilham Repke, Henry Repke, and Walter Repke; and three sisters, Cora Rathert, Lillie Repke and Neomi Chapman. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, December 16, 2013 at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Campbell Hill with Rev. Matthew Kamprath officiating. Burial will follow in St. Luke's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be at St. Luke's Lutheran Church from 7:30 am until 11 am Monday. Memorials may be given to St. Luke's Lutheran Church or Campbell Hill Volunteer Fire Department c/o the First Responders.
