STEELEVILLE – Leonard F. "Bud" Johnson, 95, of Steeleville passed away at 3:50 AM, on Sunday, February 9, 2020 at Coulterville Care Center.
He was born in Bend, Oregon on December 27, 1924 to Leonard M. and Josephine (Huskey) Johnson. Bud married Catherine Kamarit on May 2, 1946, in Olathe, KS. In their 71 years together they raised 2 children. He attended the Landmark Apostolic Church in Sparta. Bud served as a Merchant Marine in WWII. After completing his service to the country in 1946, Bud made his living in the construction trades and was a successful business owner. Bud was a very talented, self-taught artist. His many beautiful pieces included painted portraits of the first 43 presidents of the United States and local landscapes. He was very active in the Republican Party and served as a precinct committeeman. He was a member of the BBK American Legion Post #480 Steeleville, the Ainad Shriners, of East St. Louis, Illinois, the Carpenters Union, and the Masonic Lodge.
Bud is survived by his daughter Leonarda (David) Harper, of Steeleville; 5 grandchildren, Sarah (Jamie) Nagel of Campbell Hill, Candice Birdsong, Amanda Johnson, Brandena Johnson, Terra (Tony) Creamer of Steeleville; 5 great-grandchildren, Hailey Nagel, Otis and Noah Samb, and Taylor and Morgan Creamer. He is survived by 2 sisters, Leonarda Draper, and Minnie McClure.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Catherine, his son Frank and 2 sisters, Imogene Behrens and Roxana Egbert.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at the Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville with Rev. Doug Rice officiating, and burial will follow at the Ava Evergreen Cemetery, Ava. Visitation will be held on Wednesday at the funeral home where friends may call from 11 AM to 1 PM. Memorials may be made to the Landmark Apostolic Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
