STEELEVILLE - Leila Mary Gremmels, 69, of Steeleville passed away Tuesday morning, October 23, 2012, at her home. She was born June 8, 1943, in Chicago, to Edwin and Libby (Siegel) Scher. She married Kenneth Gremmels on June 12, 1966. Lee was a graduate of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and the University of Illinois and was a dedicated educator, serving as a teacher, librarian, and guidance counselor for many years in the Steeleville school district. Originally from Chicago, she was a proud member of the local community. Following her retirement she volunteered at the town library and delivered meals to local senior citizens. She was a loving mother who enjoyed traveling around the country to visit with dispersed family as well as day trips with her close friends, and delighted in her new role of grandmother to Jaya, Liam, and Anna. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Gremmels of Steeleville; her children David Gremmels and wife, Dara, of Chicago and Jeffrey Gremmels and wife, Sheree, of Jackson, MO; three grandchildren, Jaya Gremmels of Jackson, MO, and William Gremmels and Annalise Gremmels of Chicago; her mother, Libby Scher of Seattle; two sisters, Dorrie Emmel and husband, Chuck, of Belize City, Belize, and Naomi Scher of Boston; one brother, Steven Scher and wife, Delia, of Seattle; and sister-in-law Pamela Hartman and husband, Kenneth, of Steeleville. She was preceded in death by her father, Edwin Scher. Services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville with Rev. S. Blake Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery in Steeleville. Visitation will be at Wilson's Funeral Home, Steeleville where friends may call from 5 to 8 pm Friday and 7:30 to 11 am Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Steeleville Public Library.
