CUTLER – John O. Wittenborn, 80, of Cutler, Illinois, passed away at 7:17 pm, Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, Illinois.
John was born in Sparta, IL on March 1, 1936, the son of Raymond A. and Mabel D. Steffens Wittenborn. He married Sharron Jo Treece in Arkansas. He was a member of the US Air Force Reserves. John was a retired Professional Football Player as an Offensive Lineman, Linebacker, and a Place Kicker for the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles who won the 1960 World Championship, and Houston Oilers for a total of 11 years. After that, he coached football at Murphysboro High School, University of Tulsa, Mannford High School in Mannford, OK, Trico-Elverado High School and Sparta High School. John was a member of the Steeleville Baptist Church, Steeleville, IL, a Charter Member of the NFL Players Assc., Southeast Missouri Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Philadelphia Hall of Fame as a member of the 1960 World Championship team. He was an avid lifelong coon hunter.
John is survived by his wife, Sharron Jo Wittenborn of Cutler; his children, Julie (Steve) Wittenborn-Sikorski of Ava, IL, Jeff Wittenborn of Carterville, IL and Jay (Hilary) Wittenborn of Murphysboro; grandchildren, Katelyn, Claire, Harper and Graham; step grandchildren, Amber and Nathan; step great grandchildren, Addison and Karter; step children, Robert Klintworth, Evan Klintworth, and Tony (Jackie) Weldon; step grandchildren, Jakob, Lukas, Samuel and Abigail; brother, Roland Wittenborn of Sparta, IL; sisters, Lucille Wiechens of St. Charles, MO, Lois Derring of Murphysboro, Ruby (Joe) Sendek of Murphysboro, and Bonnie (Jerry) Rushing of Tamaroa, IL; sister-in-law, Anna Mae Wittenborn of Sparta; many nieces and nephews; and he's also survived by many former students, athletes and coaches that loved and respected him.
John was preceded in death by his Parents; one brother, Delmar Wittenborn; two nieces and one nephew.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the Steeleville Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Foshie officiating. Family will receive friends from 2:30 pm until 5:00 pm on Sunday at the church. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
