STEELEVILLE – John L. Shockley, of Steeleville, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2021, at the Memorial Hospital in Chester.
John was born at home in rural Pinckneyville on March 29, 1943. He was the son of Cecil, Sr. and Marie Shockley. He married Sylvia Mendel on February 23, 1963, in Clayton, Missouri. He retired from Zeigler Coal, and was a member of the U.M.W. of A Local #9905. John was a hard worker and a good provider for his family. He loved and enjoyed spending time with his family the most. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, Nascar, and was well known for his beautiful garden.
John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sylvia Shockley of Steeleville; two daughters, Gina (Jimmy) Fisher of Sparta and Paula Cash of Sparta; three grandchildren, Daniel (Samantha) Deutschmann of Mascoutah, Jenna (Josh) Chumbley of Lake St. Louis, MO, and Morgan Cash (partner, Jason Becker) of Sparta; five great grandchildren, Brayden Hatley, Mason and Ashlee Deutschmann, Amelia Chumbley and Little Britches, who is on his way; two brothers, Cecil, Jr. (Marilyn) Shockley of Sparta and Bruce (Connie) Shockley of Lenzburg; four sisters, Norma (Larry) House of Manchester, MO, Karen (Bill) Aho of Eureka, MO, Lora Montgomery of Pinckneyville, and Rita Phillips of Nashville, IL; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
John was preceded in death by his Parents; and two nephews, Jeffrey House and Kevin Nowakowski.
Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Sparta, with Father Vincent Mukasa officiating. Burial will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Tamaroa, IL. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 10 am until 11 am. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks and social distancing guidelines will be followed. Memorials may be given to Westminster Presbyterian Food Bank or Masses.
