STEELEVILLE – Dr. John David Hostert, Ph.D., 73, of Steeleville, Illinois was called to his heavenly home on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at Mercy South Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri in the company of his sons.
He was born the son of John Peter Hostert and Irene Dahlem, in California, on January 18, 1949. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Wine Hill and was an active member of the Retired Teachers Association. John served as a teacher at Menard Correctional Center, Assistant Principal for Corrections School District #428 and as a Superintendent and Principal for Bartelso #57, Prairie Du Rocher #134, Oakdale #1, St. Mark's Lutheran School, and Elverado #196. He also served as a member of the Steeleville 138 Board of Education, and Library Director of the Steeleville Public Library.
John was married to Priscilla Ackermann at St. Peter's Church in Evansville on August 20, 1977. They had three children, Timothy, Jessica, and Mark. John was considered a scholar and was awarded the George Counts Doctoral Scholarship Award. Many of his co-workers at the Sparta Printing Plant called him "The Professor." He attended Sparta High School, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (72), Illinois State University (74), and Southern Illinois University Carbondale (94). John also served as a baseball and softball coach for his children's summer ball teams. John was a lover of music, amassing an impressive collection of albums. John enjoyed telling stories and making people laugh with his great sense of humor. He enjoyed talking about politics, education, and the St. Louis Cardinals.
John is survived by his two sons; Timothy Hostert of Steeleville, IL; Mark (Tiffany) Hostert of Chester, IL; Uncle John (Ruby) Brown of Steeleville, IL; and sister in-laws, Phyllis (Andy) Pond of Madison, AL, and Betty Ackermann of Chesterfield, Missouri.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Peter Hostert, and Irene (Bill) Dahlem; his wife, Priscilla; his daughter Jessica, and two brothers, Mike and Kevin Hostert.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Thursday May 05, 2022, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church - Wine Hill with Rev. Timothy Sims officiating, burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday morning at the church where friends may call from 9:30 - 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any memorial be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
