SPARTA - John Michael (Mike) Cundiff, 68, of Sparta passed away at 9:48 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20th at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale after a battle with non-covid related pneumonia.

Mike was born on August 11, 1952 in Red Bud, IL. He was the son of John (Jay) and Rose Cundiff of Sparta.  He married Rena Ashley at Perryville, Missouri in 1988.  Mike was a school- teacher in Sparta for several years before taking over Cundiff Oil Company from his father. He also served in the Army and U.S. Army Reserves and was also a member of the Hope Lodge #162 AF/AM. Mike served on the Sparta zoning board. In his retirement, Mike enjoyed watching cooking shows and being with his family. He was a Christian and member of the Presbyterian church.

He is survived by his wife, Rena Cundiff of Sparta; children, John David (J.D.) Cundiff and wife Sarah of Jackson, MO; Reka Tabb and husband Chris of Clarksville, TN; and Becky Ballard and husband James of Hopkinsville, KY. He is also survived by his mother Rose of Sparta and sister Jaylene Cerny and brother-in-law Michael of Anna, Il. He had five grandchildren, and he also leaves behind three nephews and one niece.

It was Mike's wishes to be cremated and a private graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Shriner's Hospital.
