SPARTA – John Lloyd Luthy, 88, of Sparta, passed away peacefully at his residence on May 2, 2017, after a lengthy illness, having been confined to his home for some time.
He was born on March 22, 1929 on the family farm near Denmark, Illinois. His parents were John Elile and Hazel Speith Luthy. The family were members of the Denmark Baptist Church. John L. later became an active member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Sparta.
Following the purchase of a farm near Sparta, John L. partnered with his father in the work of the farm. After the death of his father, the farm was used for raising Angus cattle. He later retired as a supervisor from World Color Press in Sparta.
Family members surviving are: wife, Betty Gallagher Luthy whom he married on July 8, 1949. Children: Bruce Alan and Paula Steele Luthy, Lisa Luthy and Scott F Linders. Grandchildren: Bruce A. Jr. and Andrea Dawson Luthy, Cliff Luthy Linders and Jessica Britt, and Megan Luthy and Michael Knop. Great Grandchildren: Camryn, Jack and Taylor Luthy, Nolan, Dylan, and Emma Knop, and Kayla Reams. Also surviving are Shirley and Dave Wilson, Jeannie and Frank Horner, Danny and Tina Gallagher and Roland Wittenborn. Nieces: Lou Ann Eggemeyer, Lois Wolfe, Kelly Cochrane, Kendra BeDen. Nephews: Kenton Horner and D.J. Gallagher.
John L. was preceded in death by his grandson, Neil Scott Linders, his parents, John Elile and Hazel Speith Luthy, sisters, Edith Marie Luthy Carruthers, and Lois Luthy Wittenborn, and parents-in-law, Douglas and Ruth Gallagher.
Visitation will be at the Bethel Reformed Presbyterian Church in Sparta on Saturday, May 6, 2017 from noon until 3pm with a private family funeral at 3 pm. Memorials may be made to the Bethel PCA Church or Sparta Public Library. Arrangements are under the auspices of Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville.
