Joe Richard O'Dell, 79, devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Joe was born in Loogoolee, Fayette County, Illinois, on May 18, 1935, the son of Lorenzo Martin and Columbia Fern Smithson O'Dell. He married Patricia Ann "Pat" Younger on August 26, 1956 at Findlay Methodist Church, Findlay, Illinois. They were just one week away from their 58th anniversary. Joe was retired as Principal of Trico Elementary School in 1994. He had a Master's Degree from Eastern Illinois University. He was formerly a member of the Illinois National Guard. Joe was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Percy and was the Financial Officer at the church. He was also a member of the Retired Teacher's Association, NRA, and the Pyramid Oaks Golf Club. He was a teacher at Martin Township High School in 1956; Findlay Jr. High from 1957 until 1962; Assumption Jr. High from 1964 until 1972; Principal at Trico Jr. High from 1972 until 1977; and Principal of Trico Elementary School from 1977 until 1994. Joe's hobbies included collecting pocket knives, flea markets, gospel music, golfing and traveling. Joe is survived by his wife, Pat O'Dell of Percy, IL; three daughters, including twin daughters, Lisa O'Dell Poole and her husband, Scott of Champagne, IL and Laurie O'Dell Lisa and her husband, Steve of Paradise Valley, AZ, and Beth O'Dell Matz and her husband, George of Liberty, MO; seven grandchildren, Anthony Steven Lisa and his wife, Bridget, Michelle Lisa Brown and her husband, Daniel, Caitlin Laurie Lisa, Samuel Joe Edward Poole, Leah Katherine Matz, Caroline Elizabeth Matz, and Anna-Claire O'Dell Matz; one brother, Roger (Martha) O'Dell of St. Peter, IL; and one brother-in-law, Robert (Judy) Younger of Kankakee, IL. Joe was preceded in death by Parents and one son, Douglas Richard O'Dell. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Percy with Rev. Marvin "Bud" Bennett and Rev. Steve Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Percy Village Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steven Lisa, Scott Poole, George Matz, Anthony Lisa, Samuel Poole and Daniel Brown. Visitation will be at Wilson's Funeral Home, Percy, where friends may call from 5 pm until 8 pm Friday and on Saturday from 7:30 am until 9 am then from 10 am until 11 am at the church. Memorials may be given to the Wesley United Methodist Church or Juvenile Diabetes.
