Obituary

AVA – I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race.  I have kept the faith.  Irvin Phoenix, 80, of Ava, passed away on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 2:46 pm.  He was a member of Sato Baptist Church.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener and loved anything to do with nature.  He loved watching his grandchildren play volleyball, softball and sports.  They were the love of his life.

Irvin was born to Fred and Josephine Cheatham Phoenix on July 12, 1936 in Ava, IL.  He married DeFlain (Tope) Phoenix on June 20, 1958 at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, Murphysboro, IL.  He was a 25 year member of the Red Bone Coon hound association in Sesser, IL.  He was on the Jackson County Board from 1980 until 1988 and was the Chairman for one year and a School Board Member for two terms from 1975 until 1981 .  Irvin was the Tax Assessor for Ora Township from 1970 to 1980; Town Clerk for Ora Township for 4 years from 1966 until 1970; Road Commissioner for Ora Township from 1983 until 2005.  He was a Carpenter, Heavy Equipment Operator and Farmer.

Irvin is survived by his wife, DeFlain of Ava; three sons and their wives, Brett and Tammy Phoenix, Bart and Lucinda Phoenix, and Nathan and Susan Phoenix, all of Ava; seven grandchildren, Craig (Kelly) Phoenix, Kassidy (Shane) Stevenson, Taylor (Ryan) Eubanks, Kaitlyn Phoenix, Carolyn Phoenix, Garrison Phoenix and Keri Pierce; four great grandchildren, Cedar Phoenix, Everett Eubanks, Jolene Stevenson and Audrina Sloan; five brothers, Robert (Pat) Phoenix, Edward (Barbara) Phoenix, Raymond (Jean) Phoenix, Fred (Esther) Phoenix, and Roy (Joan) Phoenix; sister-in-law, Barbara Phoenix; five sisters-in-law, Jewell Levan, June (Jim) Jeffers, Barbara Heiple, Beverly Bryant, and Margie Heiman.
Irvin was preceded in death by twin daughters; granddaughter, Kristy Phoenix, daughter-in-law, Jamie Phoenix, brother, Everett Dean Phoenix and his Parents.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, February 13, 2017 at Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with Rev. Don Caraway and Craig Phoenix officiating.  Burial will follow in Ava Evergreen Cemetery.  Visitation will be at Wilson's Funeral Home, Ava, where friends may call from 5 pm until 8 pm Sunday and on Monday from 7:30 am until 11 am.  Memorials may be given to Sato Baptist Church or the Family.
