Obituary

SPARTA – Herman J. Demick, 94, of Sparta, passed away at 10:03 am, Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at the Cedarhurst Assisted Living in Sparta.

Herman was born in Pinckneyville, on June 16, 1924, the son of Joseph and Josephine Matyhowiak Demick . Herman proudly served his country as a Merchant Marine with his fellow service men during WWII both in the Atlantic and Pacific risking great peril on every voyage to deliver essential supplies to our troops inviting targets for enemy submarines and warships.  In his lifetime, he was a father, grandfather, a farmer, an insurance salesman, and production manager for World Color in Sparta for over 20 years.  Herman was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Sparta and a former member of the KC in Breese.

Herman is survived by three children, Richard (Gina) Demick of Castle Rock, CO, Marguerite (Linus) Horcher of Indianapolis, IN, and Christine (Scot) Higginbotham of Festus, MO; three step children, Cheryl (Don) Sheets of Mount Dora, FL, Kenneth (Melinda) Lodge of The Villages, FL, and Frank (Dee Dee) Graf of Percy; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Heil; and a close personal friend, Mary Ruth Bierman.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Demick and wife, Lyla Demick.

Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Sparta with Father Vincent Muhasa officiating.  Burial will follow at Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta.  Visitation will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on Friday from 6 pm to 8 pm and on Saturday from 9 am until 10 am.  The family would prefer donations to Sparta Humane Society in lieu of flowers.
