STEELEVILLE – Erna May Salger, 84, of Steeleville, passed away A5 7:23 pm, on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Memorial Hospital in Chester.
Erna May was born in Pinckneyville, Illinois, on November 6, 1940, the daughter of Herman H. and Marie Rabe Mayer. She married George A. Salger on September 21, 1963, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Campbell Hill. He preceded her in death on December 3, 2023. Erna May was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Steeleville and was very active in church affairs and school affairs, including the Altar Guild, church choir, the Evangelism Board, and the Stewardship Board. She retired from K-8 at St. Mark's Lutheran School with 38 years of teaching in the Parochial School System, and she taught Sunday School. She was also involved with Stephens Ministries and helped with shut ins.
Erna May is survived by three children, Diane Salger Kirby of Steeleville, David Salger of Steeleville and Dale Salger of Steeleville; two grandchildren, Megan Cross and Lauren Salger; and three great grandchildren, Jacob Cross, Mason Cross and Alexander Cross.
Erna May was also preceded in death by her Parents; two brothers and four sisters.
Funeral service will be held at 11:30 am, on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Steeleville, with Rev. Mark Harriss officiating. Burial will follow at Paradise Cemetery, Steeleville. Visitation will be at Wilson's Funeral Home, Steeleville, where friends may call on Tuesday from 6 pm until 8 pm and on Wednesday from 7:30 am until 9:30 am, then at St. Mark's Lutheran Church from 10:30 am until 11:30 am. Memorials may be given to St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
