STEELEVILLE – Edgar "Ed" Oswald Haertling Jr, 88, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Sparta Community Hospital, Sparta, IL.

Edgar was born on December 15, 1935, in Perry County, MO, the son of Edgar and Hertha (Ruehling) Haertling. He married Marilyn Kay Thies on October 8, 1961, at Peace Lutheran Church, Steeleville, IL. She preceded him in death on October 19, 2006. Ed was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Steeleville, IL. He owned and operated The Lodge in 1961 and Haertling Hardware in 1963, he then opened Haertling Appliance. Ed opened M & E Trucking in 1986 and worked there till his retirement in 2005.

Ed is survived by his children: Kevin (Russell) Haertling of Orlando, FL, Neal (Jennifer) Haertling of Steeleville, IL, Bonnie (Les) Hill of Steeleville, IL, Mary (Eric) Polley of Steeleville, IL; his grandchildren: Nicole (Daniel) Grein, Paige Polley, Kyle Hill, Wesley (Michele) Haertling, Jonathon (Brittany) Polley, Paris (Drew) Walter, Madison Haertling, Conner Haertling, Austin Hagel, Nicholas Hagel, Deana Hill; great grandchildren: Tylen, Grey, Haylee, Jamison, Benjamin, Kaylie, Logan; his siblings: Leonard (Lorene) Haertling of Nashville, IL, Vernell Steiner of Jackson, MO, Gladys (David) Prevallet of Nashville, TN; brother-in-law, Arnold Hadler of Ballwin, MO, sisters-in-law: Verna Haertling of Wittenberg, MO and Darlene Finley of Sparta, IL.

Ed was also preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, two brothers, one sister, three brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, January 21, 2024, at Peace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, Steeleville, IL from 1 to 4 pm, with Rev. Ken Tegtmier officiating. Memorials may be given to Peace Lutheran Church, c/o Wilson's Funeral Home, PO Box 217, Steeleville, IL, 62288.
