SPARTA– Douglas "Doug" Bockhorn, age 75, of Sparta, Illinois, passed away on June 28, 2025.
Born on January 12, 1950, Doug grew up in Steeleville, IL, and graduated from Steeleville High School in 1968. He married the love of his life, Judith (Wilson) Bockhorn, on June 12, 1970. Married for 52 years, the two began their life together in an apartment in Steeleville, before settling in Sparta with their children, where Doug lived for the rest of his life.
Doug spent the bulk of his career working as a welder and mechanic with Consol Coal Mine #4, dedicating 27 years to the job. A hard-working and self-reliant man, he also owned and operated Bockhorn Auto Salvage for 15 years, having purchased the business a few years before retiring from the mine, After retiring, Doug enjoyed finally being able to "do the work he wanted to do."
An avid outdoorsman, Doug loved hunting and fishing. He found peace and purpose in the woods and on the water, passions he carried with him throughout his life. Known for his generosity, he was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Derek Bockhorn, his father, Wayne Bockhorn, his mother, Bernice (Eggemeyer) Bockhorn, and his wife, Judith Bockhorn.
Doug is survived by his daughter, Angie (Bockhorn and her husband Num Pisutha-Arnond; his grandsons, Thai and Cole Pisutha-Arnond; his sister, Diane (Bockhorn) and her husband Tim Esala; and dear friend Bernie Connor.
Doug will be remembered for his deep work ethic, quiet strength, love of the outdoors and unwavering devotion to his friends and family.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 7, 2025, at 1:30 pm, at Peace Lutheran Church, Steeleville, IL, with Rev. Ken Tegtmeier officiating. Burial to follow at Caledonia Cemetery, Sparta, IL. Visitation will be Monday morning where friends may call from 11:30 am until time of service. Memorials may be given to Peace Lutheran Church and can be mailed to Wilson's Funeral Home, P.O. Box 217, Steeleville, IL 62288.
