STEELEVILLE – Donald L. Smith, 83, of Steeleville, passed away at 5:40 pm, Sunday, April 7, 2019, at Sparta Community Hospital, Sparta, Illinois.
Donald was born in Campbell Hill, Illinois, on December 4, 1935, the son of the late Walter L. and Emma Rathert Smith. He married Carol M. Voss on September 28, 1963 at Steeleville. Donald was an Electrician. Don was a veteran of the US Navy, having served from 1954 until 1958. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Steeleville. He was the past Chairman of the Congregation, served as an Elder and Trustee and was a former School Board member at St. Mark's Lutheran School. Don was retired from Steeleville Fire Departments; was a member of I.B.E.W. Local 702 in West Frankfort, Illinois for 55 years; and he formerly served on Steeleville Town Board.
Donald is survived by his wife, Carol Smith of Steeleville; children, Brian (Jill) Smith of Steeleville, Steven Smith of Steeleville, Michael (Misty) Smith of Steeleville; grandchildren, Daniel Smith, Brandon (Brooke) Smith, A.J. Smith (Sarah Heideman), Michaela Smith, Makenzie Smith , Stephen (Paige) Scott and Meggie White; great grandchildren, Hadley Smith, Eryn Valle and another one on the way; siblings, Janet (Darl) Bollman of Steeleville, James (Jeannette) Smith of Steeleville and William (Linda) Smith of Chester.
Donald was preceded in death by his Parents; brother, Howard Rathert; nephew, Jason Smith; and niece, Jeanna Faulk.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, April 11, 2019, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Steeleville, with Rev. William Engfehr officiating. Burial will follow at Paradise Cemetery, Steeleville. Visitation will be at Wilson's Funeral Home, Steeleville, where friends may call from 5 pm until 8 pm Wednesday and on Thursday from 7:30 am until 11 am, then from Noon until 1 pm at the church. Memorials may be given to St. Mark's Lutheran Church or Grant Aid Endowment.
