Obituary

CAMPBELL HILL - Andrew Lyle Wydeck Jr, 79, of Campbell Hill, Illinois passed away Sunday, August 7th at the VA Medical Center in Marion, Illinois.

He was born March 28, 1937 in Percy, Illinois, to Andrew Lyle and Dorothy Mae (Popham) Wydeck Sr.  He graduated in 1955 from Trico High School in Campbell Hill.  He served in the US Navy as an Engineman Fireman on the USS Oak Hill. In 1958, he was with the West Pac tour which supplied Nationalist Chinese offshore islands as they withstood shelling by Chinese Communist Guns. He was honorably discharged in 1959.

His first marriage to Linda Hawkins blessed him with three children, Steve Wydeck of Fairfield, California, Kathy Puckett of Oregon, and Laura (Bonara) Uk of Texas.  He married Sarah Ruth Green on June 30, 1994 and was step-father to her three children, Diane (Melvin) Anderson of Ava, Illinois, Richard (Kathy) Gerler of Brentwood, Tennessee, and Michelle Gerler (Jim Rich) of Ava, Illinois.

Lyle worked as a union carpenter in Oregon and St Louis for about 30 years.  He retired in 2002 after 13 years as a carpenter at SIU Physical Plant in Carbondale.  For the past 10 years, Lyle & Sarah had traveled the U.S. working with Laborers for Christ on church construction projects.  He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Campbell Hill.  Lyle was always willing to help others, especially with construction projects no matter how large or small, and never slowed down until his illness forced him to.  He always had a puzzle on the kitchen table that he and other family members would work on.  He enjoyed watching his family as they participated in various sports and was especially fond of volleyball, softball, old westerns and meat and potatoes at every meal.

In addition to his wife Sarah, children and step-children, he is survived by grandchildren Kelly & Bradley Puckett, Madison, Jaz & Parker Uk, Keith (Ashley) Anderson, Danielle Anderson, Brian (Renee) Anderson, Marisa, Kelsea and Dana Gerler, and Craig (Jessica) Gerler; great-grandchildren Ethan Puckett & Aidan Givens, Alayna Anderson, Noelle & Bristol Anderson, and Colton & Corey Gerler; siblings Kay (Lodge) Degenhardt, Bill Dean & Wayne Lodge, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Archie Wydeck, and a brother-in-law Bill Degenhardt.

It was Lyle's wish to be cremated.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 10th at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Campbell Hill, at 10 a.m. with visitation one hour before the service.  Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. at Percy Village Cemetery in Percy, Illinois.  Memorials may be given to Camp Wartburg in Waterloo, IL, or Zion Lutheran Church in Stillwater, OK, both of which were Laborers for Christ projects dear to Lyle and Sarah.
