SPARTA – Alverna Heller, nee Stellhorn, 99, left this life at 9:08 AM, Wednesday, December 12, 2018, at the Randolph County Care Center, in Sparta.
Alverna was born on November 14, 1919 in Red Bud, to Walter and Emma (Piel) Stellhorn. Alverna married William (Bill) Heller on January 19, 1939, in Uniontown, Missouri. They were blessed with 6 children. He passed away on December 23, 1978. She was an avid quilter and over the years designed a couple hundred quilts which she either gave away to her children and grandchildren or sold. These quilts are cherished by her family. She was well known for the quality of her embroidery and quilting. Once she won a ribbon for a quilt in the National Quilt Show in Sisters, Organ. She quilted as a volunteer at the Randolph County Care Center for 26 years, and continued for 3 years while a resident. Alverna was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Sparta, and volunteered with numerous events there also. Over the years, she sold Stanley products, Amway and Mary Kay Cosmetics. In 1986, she retired from Singer Stove Foundry in Red Bud. After that she worked at in Granny's Corner at the County Roller Rink which was owned by her son Gary and his wife Teri.
She is survived by her children; Delbert, Redmond, Oregon, Marvin (Carolyn) of Kendallville, Indiana, Nina (Jimmie) Witherspoon, of Crandall, Texas, Wilbert (Jean) of Crandall, Texas, Marilyn Hummert, of Belleville, and Gary (special friend Jane Kiefer) of Sparta, 48 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 36 great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughters-in-law; Teri and Wanda, granddaughter, grandson, great grandson, and great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, December 15, 2018, at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Sparta, with Rev. Timothy Sims, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Red Bud. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday evening where friends may call from 6 to 8 PM, and then on Saturday from 9 to 10 AM. Memorials may be made to the Randolph County Care Center, Activity Fund. Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville is assisting the family with the arrangements.
